Please join us on Saturday, August 16th from 7-9pm for the closing reception and final viewing of FOG, a solo exhibition of conceptual underwater photography by Mallory Morrison. This reception will be the last chance to meet the artist and view the exhibition before it leaves the Bay Area.
In FOG, Morrison captures feelings of uncertainty, desperation, and ultimate release throughout a journey to the water’s surface. These feelings not only captivate the viewer, but also reflect Morrison’s artistic process of holding her breath underwater to capture each submerged form. The series tells the story of accepting the unknown: that which is on the other side of the surface and beyond the frame.
FOG’s centerpiece, The Path, embodies the journey toward this acceptance, while the womb-like Cocoon visualizes the transformation of physical weightlessness into emotional weightlessness. The open spaces and raw moments captured by Morrison allow the viewer to reflect and connect with the images.
The influential photography website PhotoFocus.com recently described Morrison’s underwater scenes as, “places we rarely get to imagine… It would not feel out of place to see her photos on the walls of the Uffizi in Italy, but at the same time would still feel at home in the MoMa in San Francisco."
Born in Chicago and raised in San Carlos, California, Morrison has a B.A. in Art from University of California, Santa Cruz and a B.A. in Commercial Photography from Brooks Institute in Santa Barbara.
Morrison has exhibited her work at Gallery 169 in Malibu, Hale Arts Space in Santa Monica, and Art Project Paia on Maui. She has also participated in several noteworthy group shows, including Women in Photography in Santa Monica and Create:Fixate in Los Angeles, along with being the featured artist at The Aquarium of the Pacific’s annual Night Dive event in Long Beach, CA.
Morrison is a Los Angeles-based artist and has been working primarily on underwater photography projects for the past seven years. FOG is her first exhibition in her native San Francisco Bay Area.
