SAN FRANCISCO (BCN)

The U.S. Attorney's Office in the Northern District of California, based in San Francisco, collected more than $327 million in criminal and civil actions in fiscal year 2014, federal prosecutors said.

The amount represents the fifth-highest amount of money collected by a U.S. Attorney's Office in the country, prosecutors said.

The vast majority of the money collected, about $321 million, was from criminal actions, while approximately $5.7 million was from civil actions, according to the U.S. Attorney's Office.

U.S. Attorney Melinda Haag said her office collected millions from financial institutions and others who defrauded private citizens and the federal government.

"This office's financial litigation unit works relentlessly to ensure that those found accountable make their victims whole," Haag said in a statement.

U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder said the Department of Justice collected $24.7 billion in civil and criminal actions nationally in the fiscal year ending on Sept. 30.

"Every day, the Justice Department's federal prosecutors and trial attorneys work hard to protect our citizens, to safeguard precious taxpayer resources, and to provide a valuable return on investment to the American people," Holder said in a statement.

"Their diligent efforts are enabling us to achieve justice and recoup losses in virtually every sector of the U.S. economy," he said.
